President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda announced a significant collaborative effort between Russia, South Korea, and his nation, unveiling plans to construct two nuclear power stations in Uganda with a combined capacity to generate a massive 15,600 megawatts of electrical power.

During his speech at a coffee summit on Tuesday, President Museveni detailed the specifications of the two units. One of the nuclear power units is projected to generate 7,000MW, while the other is slated to produce an even larger output of 8,400MW. However, pertinent details regarding the exact timeline and financial aspects of these projects remain undisclosed at present.

President Museveni expressed, “We have reached an accord with both Russia and South Korea to embark on the establishment of two uranium-based power stations aimed at bolstering our electricity generation capabilities.”

Notably, this is not the first instance in which the Ugandan government has broached the topic of introducing a nuclear power station within its borders. As far back as 2016, officials from Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, a Russian government-owned entity, visited Uganda and entered into an agreement with local authorities pertaining to the nuclear power station’s development. Regrettably, despite the initial pact, the project failed to take off the ground.
