At least two fishermen have been confirmed dead following a tragic incident in Lake Kyoga, Amolatar District. The unfortunate event occurred on Wednesday around 10 am at Nalubwoyo landing site when their boat capsized due to a strong wind, lightning, and a severe storm.
The deceased individuals have been identified as Moses Omara, 27, from Odyak Parish, and Innocent Oron, 26, from Atongparo village, both residents of Muntu Sub County, Amolatar District. The boat had three fishermen on board during the incident, and fortunately, Sam Okullu, a resident of Nalubwoyo Sub County, survived.
SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the occurrence and mentioned that Omara’s body has been retrieved while the search for Oron’s body is still ongoing.
In his statement on Wednesday, SP Okema reported, “An incident of alleged death by drowning of two persons whose small boat capsized in water due to strong winds was reported at Nalubwoyo police post in Nalubwoyo Sub County in Amolatar district.”
Efforts to locate the missing body are continuing, and a comprehensive report will follow. According to Mr. Alfred Yubu Ocen, the Nalubwoyo Sub County Chairperson, the accident can be attributed to the use of unrecommended vessels and overloading by the victims.
Ocen urged the public to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets while traveling through water transport and to refrain from overloading their vessels to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.
