Oyam Town Council’s Town Clerk Under Scrutiny Over 34M Loss

Wednesday, August 2, 2023

Police in Oyam district have launched an investigation into the Town Clerk of Oyam Town Council, Tony Nixson Obua, following the disappearance of 34 million shillings. The probe was initiated by the Resident District Commissioner of Oyam, William Komakech, after discovering that crucial road projects in Oyam Town Council had not received adequate attention despite the allocation of 111,000,000 shillings from the government.

RDC Komakech summoned both the District Engineer of Oyam, Robert Owiny, and Tony Nixson Obua to account for the state of the roads in the town council. The 34 million shillings sent for this purpose remained unaccounted for, leading to suspicions of financial mismanagement.

In response to the allegations, Tony Obua accused Oyam Town Council of pressuring him to divert the funds for other purposes. He claimed that the funds were redirected to cover councilor’s allowances, procure a Tri-Cycle for garbage collection, and make payments to seven ghost civil servants within the council.

Disputing Obua’s claims, Stephen Okello, the LC3 of Oyam Town Council, denied any involvement in the alleged misuse of funds. He pointed out that Obua had been under scrutiny for a prolonged period due to financial irregularities.

The investigation into the matter remains ongoing, as confirmed by Geoffrey Matwale, the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department (OC CID) in Oyam. Meanwhile, Obua has been released on bail during the course of the inquiry.

Authorities are committed to resolving this financial discrepancy to ensure transparency and accountability within Oyam Town Council. Further updates on the investigation will be provided as developments arise.
