The Criminal Investigation Department of the Police has apprehended an agent working for the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) on charges of abuse of office.
Asiimwe Innocent, a NIRA agent responsible for registering National Identity Cards in Kole district, was taken into custody.
The arrest came after allegations that Asiimwe had transported the registration machine from Kole district to Kampala in 2021 and engaged in unlawful registration activities.
According to Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, Asiimwe is accused of registering individuals during unauthorized hours, including late at night. These actions were in violation of NIRA regulations, which strictly prohibit registrations during nighttime hours.
“It was found that Asiimwe had no official authorization from NIRA to relocate the registration machine to Kampala for work purposes,” stated Enanga.
Asiimwe is scheduled to appear before the anti-corruption division in Kololo on Monday for prosecution.
