In a shocking turn of events, the Oyam North by-elections have been marred by blatant rigging. Reports have emerged of an unidentified group, accompanied by military personnel, storming the Wang Lobo polling station in Otwal Sub County. The group, wielding guns and resorting to intimidation tactics, took the presiding officer aside and coerced them into fraudulent activities.
According to the presiding officer, this harrowing ordeal unfolded as they were held at gunpoint. In a distressing turn of events, the officer was forced to comply with their demands. The group ticked a staggering 250 ballot papers, which equates to five booklets of fraudulently cast votes.
It is essential to note that these by-elections were organized as a replacement for the late Col. Engola, who tragically lost his life due to an incident involving his bodyguard, Pte Sabiiti.
It should be recalled that there are four candidates in the race, among them, academic-cum-researcher Dr Eunice Apio Otuko of UPC, and Mr Samuel Engola Okello, a son of the slain minister that the ruling party picked as its flag bearer.
This incident has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the fundamental principles of democracy. The presence of unidentified individuals, storming a polling station and manipulating the voting process, is an alarming violation of the democratic rights of the citizens of Oyam North.
