The retired Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Rt Rev James William Ssebaggala has been appointed caretaker of Luwero Diocese for the period of eight months.
Ssebaggala’s appointment was confirmed in a letter dated July 14, 2023 by the Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu.
“In a letter addressed to Ssebaggala, it was stated that your appointment will commence on Tuesday, July 18. We place our trust in the Almighty to guide and empower you in fulfilling your responsibilities,” expressed Kaziimba.
“We join you in prayer and extend our prayers to your family as you embark on this important duty. May the Lord continue to strengthen your faith,” added the letter.
The appointment of Ssebaggala comes following the retirement of the outgoing bishop, Rt. Rev Eridard Nsubuga Kironde, who abdicated and transferred ecclesiastical authority to the Archbishop in accordance with the Constitution and Canons of the Church of Uganda.
In early April, Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana was elected as Kironde’s replacement. However, the House of Bishops nullified Kasana’s election last month, citing misrepresentation of his integrity during the nomination and election process, rendering the election invalid. The House of Bishops instructed the Diocesan Nominations Committee to conduct fresh nominations within a one-month period, concluding on July 31, 2023.
As per the church leadership, the House of Bishops was scheduled to receive the fresh nominations for the next Bishop of Luwero and conduct the election on August 1, 2023. The consecration and enthronement were planned to take place on August 6 at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Luwero.
However, considering that Ssebaggala’s term ends on March 18, 2024, it remains uncertain whether the House of Bishops will make any changes to the tentative program.
