National Gaming Board Officials Arrested at Parliament Over Bribery

Thursday, August 3, 2023

The Uganda Lottery and Gaming Board has faced allegations of extortion from operators. The Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Authority and State Enterprises (COSASE), chaired by Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi, received information that an official named Deborah Kituyi from the gaming board solicited bribes to reopen previously closed gaming centers.

During a hearing, the committee chairperson Ssenyonyi highlighted a specific case where Kituyi allegedly demanded a bribe of Sh50m from the gaming company Golden Tripled, which had been shut down for purportedly violating curfew hours during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, the gaming board, under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Denis Mudene, faced accusations of unlawfully confiscating and destroying gaming machines without conducting proper due diligence.

In light of these serious allegations and suspicions of officials lying under oath, Chairperson Ssenyonyi handed over the gaming board officials to the parliamentary Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogations.
