Kasese, Uganda | The Black Examiner – Lieutenant Joe Walunsimbi, the Resident District Commissioner of Kasese, has inaugurated a Micro Project within the Luwero-Rwenzori region, with a value of 192 million shillings. This initiative is designed to provide economic support to those who were adversely impacted by the effects of the 1981-86 liberation war and the ADF insurgency of 1996-2003.
Lt. Walunsimbi unveiled the project during a ceremony held at the Kasese District Council Hall this morning. The project, which emphasizes community leadership, will be tailored according to the capabilities of each recipient group. The overarching objective is to ameliorate the enduring consequences of past conflicts and insurgency by enhancing the socio-economic welfare of the local population.
Focusing primarily on commercial agriculture and Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (Sacco’s), this program is poised to empower the region. Notable among the sixteen beneficiary groups are Rwenzori X Combatants United Farmers, Thuwathikanaye Catchiest Association, Imam Union for Peace, and Muhumura Family Group. Each of these groups is slated to receive more than ten million shillings.
Lt. Walunsimbi recalled that in 2006, the government had allocated approximately five hundred million shillings for a similar project. The significance of this recent grant cannot be understated, as it aims to augment household income and uplift the standard of living for many.
Joseph Muchanga and Kereen Businge expressed their appreciation for the government’s grant, recognizing its potential to elevate household financial stability. Mr. Eriab Begumya, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Kasese District, assured vigilant oversight of government funds and proposed a specialized audit to ensure accountability. Additionally, he provided advice to beneficiaries regarding prudent enterprise selection and the necessity for a change in mindset.
