Former UNBS ED Ebiru Arrested

Wednesday, July 26, 2023

Former Executive Director of Uganda National Bureau of Standards, David Livingstone Ebiru, has been Apprehended by the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) in Kampala. The arrest took place on Wednesday afternoon.

The IGG stated that Ebiru will be brought before the Anti-Corruption Court. His arrest follows a warrant issued on July 21, 2023, by Deputy IGG Anne Twinomugisah Muhairwe after he failed to appear at her chambers to address corruption allegations.

In the arrest warrant, Deputy IGG explained that Mr. Ebiru was ordered to appear before the Inspectorate of Government on July 21, 2023, at 2 pm and on subsequent days, to provide testimony and information regarding an ongoing inquiry. However, he did not comply with the summons and did not provide any evidence for his failure to respond.

The ombudsman directed that any officer who encounters Ebiru should arrest him.

This development occurred after the suspect revealed last week during his appearance before Parliament’s Committee on Public Accounts – Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) that he paid a bribe of shs100 million in an attempt to prevent the termination of his contract. Ebiru admitted to bribing a board member to secure his position. Later, he retracted the confession, claiming that it was made in a moment of anger.
