Kisoro, Uganda | The Black Examiner – In Kisoro District, the police have arrested two individuals on charges of possessing firearms unlawfully.

The detainees have been identified as Sadiki Gashendure, a 29-year-old Congolese national residing in Karambo village, Bunagana, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Silvani Uwirangiye, a 32-year-old resident of Gatete village in Rwaramba parish, Nyakinama sub-county, Kisoro district.

Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi Region Police, reported that the arrests occurred during the evening of August 12, 2023, around 7:00 PM, following a tip-off received through intelligence sources.

The provided information prompted joint security efforts involving the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces and the Police to intercept Sadiki Gashendure as he crossed the Bunyangaro-Nyabwishenya border from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gashendure was found carrying a cache of firearms.

Subsequent actions by the security team led to Gashendure’s apprehension near Stanbic Bank in Kisoro Township. During his arrest, two hand grenades were discovered in his possession.

Further inquiries revealed that Gashendure possessed an SMG rifle, which he indicated had been entrusted to Silvani Uwiragiye. Uwiragiye was also taken into custody. An ensuing investigation led the authorities to recover the SMG rifle (with Serial Number: 56×20019268) along with a stash of 64 live ammunition rounds concealed within a banana plantation near Uwiragiye’s residence in Gatete.

Maate emphasized that both the confiscated weapons and the apprehended suspects are currently under police custody. Ongoing investigations aim to establish the origin of the firearms, the motives behind their possession, and any potential accomplices involved.
