Butsibo School In Sheema Closed After Students Strike

Thursday, August 3, 2023

Authorities in Sheema District yesterday temporally closed down Butsibo secondary school and arrested four teachers and three students over a violent strike.

Marcial Tumusiime the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson identified the four teachers as Hopekins Ninsiima, Ezra Kato, Clement Kyarikunda and Betty Musiime. The three students were; Blair Agaba Kabarungi Isaac, Katongole Hamza and Precious Atamba. Others are Marion Kembabazi the school secretary and Ricky Isingoma a casual labourer.

It’s alleged that the ministry of education and sports late last month retired the school head teacher Geoffrey Twehamye after he requested early retirement since he had not yet clocked 60 years.

He was replaced with Mwesigwa Robert and after the handover on Monday the students, teachers and non teaching staff were not happy as some students went on to break the store and poured some posho and beans down.

This prompted the new head teacher to inform police on 01/ 08/2023 on the pending strike at the school. However after a meeting with security students accepted to go back to class and lessons resumed until yesterday when students went on rampage and started breaking the window/ door glasses and later burnt one of the boys dormitories.

This forced authorities to send the entire students home until further notice as inquiries continue.
