A woman has been apprehended by the police in Rwampara district, located in western Uganda, for stealing a motor vehicle during the burial ceremony of the well-known businessman Apollo Nyegamehe, also known as Aponye. The incident occurred on Wednesday.
The stolen vehicle, a Suzuki with the registration number UAT 478N, was affiliated with Kikungiri Archdeaconry, situated in the Southern division of Kabale Municipality under the Kigezi Diocese.
According to information shared by AIGP (rtd) Asan Kasingye, the former Political Commissar in Uganda Police, the woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was intercepted by traffic officers at a roadblock in Rwampara along the highway.
During the requiem service at the deceased’s residence in Muhanga town council, the Kigezi Diocese Secretary, Rev Canon Milton Nkurunungi, reported the vehicle missing. Aponye was eventually laid to rest.
“We were attending the burial [Aponye’s burial], and one of our archdeacon’s vehicles was stolen. We have reported the incident to the police and the District Police Commander (DPC), and we have also informed authorities in Ntungamo and Mbarara. They are actively working to recover the vehicle,” stated Rev. Canon Nkurunungi, as quoted by KFM on Wednesday evening.
He strongly condemned the act, expressing disbelief at how someone could exploit a grieving situation to commit such a crime.
